About Us

Background

A moment in life without electricity in the modern society makes us feel as being in the stone age which ended around 10,000 years ago. Such is the influence and importance of energy in today’s world.

The concept of energy has been around in the world probably since humans succeeded in lighting fire. Coal is used as a source of energy since 1,000 B.C. Wind was the first energy source used for transportation. About 2,500 years ago, people began using windmills and water wheels to grind grain. However, it was not until the Industrial Revolution in England in the mid-1700s that coal began to replace biomass as the primary source of energy. Since the Industrial Revolution, the importance of energy has grown at an exponential rate over the years. So much so, that the world is not reeling under the influence of using up too much energy too soon in the form of global warming and climate change. Alarmingly enough, the use of energy is increasing over the years, yet a substantial part of the world population live without any modern source of energy. Inclusivity in the use of energy and the modern world’s appetite for energy use would only ensure that the negative aspects of energy use are going to be exacerbated in the foreseeable future.

In this context of growing use of energy and worsening ecological and environmental degradation, the use of sustainable and clean sources of energy has cropped up. The United Nations has stressed upon the concept of Sustainable Development to have a balance between energy use and environmental stability. It has become imperative that more and more institutions, agencies and organisations take up the task of looking for cleaner and sustainable production and use of energy. The academia with its cutting-edge research needs to complement the industries’ best practices in the domain of energy for sustainable development to take place.

With a view to be a leading institution that acts as an interface between the academia and the industry, the Centre of Excellence in Energy (CoEEn) is established. The CoEEn has the support of the Adani Group, the largest growing infrastructure conglomerate in India. With a zeal to excel and with the strong backing of the Adani Group as its supporter, the CoEEn strives towards being an internationally leading think-tank in the energy domain, bringing in the best of academia and the industry in its events for a truly synergistic collaboration for a better future.

Indian Energy Outlook

Pic: IEX There is no doubt that India is on a path to become one of the largest economies in the world. Still, India's per capita energy consumption today is one-third the global average. Such low per capita energy consumption is an indication of the potential for economic growth. Surely energy will play a critical role in supporting — or encumbering — India's economic growth. The country's energy needs include electricity for agriculture, rural electrification, greater mobility and the power to develop and run modern infrastructure. Primary energy sources like coal, biomass, petroleum and natural gas are predominantly being used in electricity generation, cooking, transportation and industrial processes. In order to shift towards renewable or green energy alternatives for energy generation processes, India has announced an ambitious target of installing 450 GW of renewable energy plants by 2030. This target is higher than our total fossil fuel based ...

Hydrogen Economy

Hydrogen Economy   What is Hydrogen? Hydrogen is a natural chemical element. In nature, it exists as a molecule. That means that it is made up of two hydrogen atoms, which is why its chemical formula is H ₂ . It is perhaps best known as one of the elements that makes up water. The other is oxygen. That is why water’s chemical formula is H 2 O. In fact, it is naturally linked to other elements. That is, it does not exist on its own. Hydrogen is the simplest and most abundant element on earth—it consists of only one proton and one electron. Hydrogen can store and deliver usable energy, but it doesn't typically exist by itself in nature and must be produced from compounds that contain it. Hydrogen gas has remarkable characteristics including colourless, tasteless and invisible that make it hotly pursued. It can also be transformed into a renewable, non-polluting and zero emission energy resource. It’s considered the cornerstone of the new energy econom...
